Collection: Ukiyo-e / Woodblock Printing
Ukiyo-e, or woodblock-printing, is a traditional Japanese art form that dates back over 300 years.
The word “Ukiyo-e,” meaning “pictures of the floating world,” depicts famous theater actors, beautiful courtesans, city life, and landscapes. Its unique techniques – flattened perspective to fit in one piece, and innovative compositions – had a profound impact on European artists around this time, such as Mary Cassatt and Vincent van Gogh, as well as the Japonisme art movement.
