Persimmon glaze is atraditional glaze representative of Mashiko. The red enamel technique is one that Shoji Hamada learned in his youth in Kyoto. Since then, even now, he continues to use red enamel pigments from Kyoto. The persimmon glaze spreads across the entire inner surface, creating a piece with the characteristic soft expression of Mashiko ware.
