This is a print from One Hundred Famous Places of Edo, a series created by the famous ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige in the last years of his life in the 1850s. The series consists of 120 prints, including a table of contents. A cat sits at a latticed window. Outside, a procession of people is depicted walking along a path between rice fields towards the Ōtori Shrine in Asakusa. The use of the contrast between the large window in the foreground and the small motifs in the distance, such as the rice fields and Mt. Fuji, to create a heightened sense of perspective is characteristic of One Hundred Famous Places of Edo, as is the vertical composition.
