This celebrated print from Hiroshige’s renowned series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo depicts the famous plum garden at Kameido. A bold close-up of a blossoming plum branch fills the foreground, while visitors stroll among the plum trees in the garden beyond.

The unusual composition—framing the distant landscape through the powerful curves of the foreground tree—was highly innovative for its time. The contrast of the white blossoms against the blue sky conveys both the freshness of spring and the refined beauty of Edo’s famous garden.

Hiroshige’s design later inspired Western artists, most notably Vincent van Gogh, who painted Japonaiserie: Flowering Plum Tree in 1887, capturing the print’s composition and vibrant colors in his own oil version.
