Saruwaka-cho is located near present-day Asakusa 6-chome, Taito-ku, Tokyo. Saruwaka-cho was a theater town where all the theaters in Edo gathered and was named after the founder of Edo Kabuki, Kanzaburo Saruwaka, the head of the Nakamura-za theater. Painted in one-point perspective, this is an atmospheric work in which the loneliness of autumn can be felt amidst the splendor and bustle of the night. The full moon in the night sky is covered with thin clouds using the "atenashi bokashi" technique in which the woodblock is wetted and then blurred by applying paint on top of it without making a mark.
A bright blue night with a full moon is impressive. It is said that Van Gogh was impressed by this work and drew his oil painting of “Café Terrace at Night”.
