Artist Tomoo Hamada explores the form of knotted vases and has crafted various types. This particular piece showcases interconnected knots that give the impression of endless continuity. Known as a “henko,” this flat vase draws its inspiration from the historical transformation of leather water bottles, originally brought from the West through the Silk Road trade, into ceramic vases in China. Tomoo has applied red enamel with a brush over the black glaze, using an impromptu technique, freely placing it within the knot formations. This vase, with its auspicious form, serves as a good luck charm when used as a flower vessel. The overall gentle curvature adds a touch of elegance, making it a piece ideal for prominent placements, such as at the entrance, where it can be regularly admired.
